Be Assertive Learning Review

This post is a review about what we have been learning about in English so far. In English so far we have been learning about how to be assertive.

Here is a link to the teacher's resource

  1. What are the four types of behavioural responses, and what does each mean (in your own words)? - Aggression- someone that is not happy and only thinks negative about every situation, passive- someone that doesn't like confrontation and is very quiet, indirect- they get other people to complain about things instead of themselves, assertive- these people always take in other peoples opinions, thoughts and feelings as well as expressing their own.

  1. What is the definition of Assertive Communication? - Assertive communication is expressing your thoughts, feelings and opinions without putting anyone else's down.

  1. What are the three ‘describes’? When should you use them? - Describe the situation, Describe your feelings, Describe the changes you want. You should use these when you are having a conversation with someone about what you want to happen with whatever the situation is.

  1. List and explain 5 of the ‘Assertive Communication Tools’. Think of your own example for each. - Acknowledge their feelings- think about others opinions, thoughts and feelings, thank them- thank the person for listening to you and being so kind, be positive- don't think negative about the topic or subject you are talking or thinking about, focus- focus on the subject you are talking about and don't go off-topic, use 'i' statements- you explain the way you feel.

  1. List and explain in your own words 3 barriers to assertive communication. - Cultural- when there is a female in charge and people think that since she is a woman that she doesn't have an opinion and isn't strong enough to run something, gender- people may think that since this person is a female she cannot lift heavy things and help in the workplace, age- when your supervisor is younger than you and you decide not to listen to them because "they don't know anything".

  1. What does assertive communication look like? - Maintain eye contact, sit up straight, face the person, relax arms don't cross them, do not smile or giggle, lean forward slightly and nod your head to show you are listening.

  1. What does assertive communication sound like? - polite but firm, your voice should vary levels, clear speaking.

  1. What does it mean to act like a scratched record when it comes to your boundaries? - You keep talking about whatever it is until everyone understands and hears you.

  1. Think back to a time when you or a friend used a behavioural response that was not assertive. What type was it? What did you say? What happened as a result? What could you have done differently? - When someone has said something that I don't agree with I was very passive and didn't voice my opinion, thoughts and feelings. What happened was that they thought that I agreed with them which I definitely did not agree. I could have used my voice and been assertive but I didn't.

  1. Reflect on your behavioural responses until now. How do you usually respond to tricky situations? Do you want to change the way you respond, moving forward? What will you try to remember in the future when difficult situations arise? - When I am in a tricky situation depending on what it is I am usually passive towards the situation. Yes, I do want to change the way I respond I would like to be more assertive towards people and different situations. In the future, I will try to voice my opinion as much as I can and keep others opinions, thoughts and feelings in mind.

Kitchen recycling programme- English

Re: Update about the kitchen recycling programme

Hey guys, this is just a quick update about the kitchen recycling programme we have. I have had mostly positive feedback from staff about the new system.

  • Most of the recycling bins are being used correctly.

  • There is some confusion over the types of plastic that are recyclable.

  • Some staff think it's a waste of time, but do follow the rules.

  • The food bin isn't emptied enough so it starts to become smelly. Empty it as soon as it gets too full, please.

Thank you for your participation,

Harry

Subject: Fire evacuation procedure in our workplace

Hi everyone,

I have been given the clear instruction to share to you guys the set of the fire evacuation procedures. Our last fire evacuation, no one in our workplace knew what to do to keep themselves and others safe. Please follow these instructions so then we can all get things done safely.

  • When the fire alarm sounds leave the building immediately and assemble at the main car park.

  • You must NOT leave the car park or return into the building until we have all been given the all-clear from the Fire Safety Officer.

  • Keep the emergency exits all clear of stock boxes, chairs, tables etc it is illegal and unsafe to have things in front or near the exits.

Thank You,

Meg

Newsletter- Reduce plastic waste scheme

Stanley Organics LTD Newsletter.

Dear Customers and Suppliers

Stanley Organics Ltd has started a new scheme to reduce our plastic waste. We invite customers to be a part of the new scheme. We are working together with customers as a community, feedback on improvements to our scheme are welcome. We aim to change the way customers buy everyday products.

  • We are going to be reducing our plastic usage in packaging. So we will be starting to use biodegradable/ degradable bags and bottles that only break down in specific conditions- not a long-term solution.

  • All plastic bags now replaced with hessian bags (made from flax and hemp fibres). First bag free with purchases over $50. Or we will provide recycled cardboard boxes (and help carry to your car).

  • Most liquid products (liquid soap, shampoo, dishwashing liquid, etc) now available in ‘fill your own’ containers. Bring your own container to fill and get a 5% discount.

  • Fresh vegetables- instead of plastic bags, try reusable waxed cotton bags to keep food fresh.

Thank you for your support. Hope to see you in our store sometime soon.

Gran Torino Questions

  1. Where does Gran Torino take place? When?
Detroit, Michigan. 2008
  1. What is significant about this setting?
The Hmong population is bigger in that area.
  1. What do you think is Walt’s motivation for mentoring Tao?
He’s trying to get Tao to man up and become an independent man, instead of being a follower.
  1. How does Walt feel about Sue compared to her brother Tao, in the beginning? Why do you think he feels this way?
He like sue because she was more independent than her brother, she stuck up for herself when she needed to.
  1. How does Walt feel about his own family? How is this different from the way his neighbours treat the idea of family?
He seems to not like his family a lot because of the way they treat him. His neighbours treat their family with respect and they are always loving each other.
  1. What are some customs which Walt’s neighbours have which surprise him?
The food they had from their culture was really good to him. He also liked all the little gift they had.
  1. Have you ever experienced “culture shock” or been surprised by a cultural practice which is different from your own? What surprised you and why?
No, I don’t think so.
  1. What is the purpose of the priest character? How would the film be different if this character was not included in the story?
The priest character is trying to make Walt happy and enjoy life a little more after his wife Dorothy died. I don't think the film would be any different without the priest.
  1. How is Walt affected by his experiences at war?
He now thinks every Hmong or Asian person is out to get him every time he sees one.
  1. What do you think is the director’s view of gang culture? How do you know?
I don’t know.
  1. Why do you think the film is called Gran Torino? What is the significance of the title?
The film is called Gran Torino because it is based around Tao stealing his precious car that Walt has had for many many years.
  1. What is the role of religion in this film?

Hmong
